FAQs

What degrees and certifications do I need to be a travel nurse?

(You do not need any additional degrees or certifications than what you need to be a staff nurse.)

RN degree
You will need a degree as a registered nurse with a minimum of an Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) degree.

NCLEX-RN exam
After graduating from a nursing program, you must pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN). This is a standardized exam that each state board uses to determine whether a nurse is ready to practice.

Nursing license
Source Medical can help you with the licensing process. The licensing process varies state to state.

Additional certifications
Depending on your specialty of choice, you may need additional certification.

How much experience do you need?

You will need at least one year of experience in your specialty, preferably in a hospital setting, before you can become a travel nurse. Some hospitals require two plus years of experience and/or previous travel nursing experience. Your Source Medical recruiter can help find travel contracts that will best fit your level of experience.

How long are travel contracts?

Travel contracts, also known as travel assignments, can vary in length but typically are 13 weeks. Contracts can be shorter or longer depending on the need of the healthcare facility. Flexibility! This is one of the best things about travel nursing; you have the choice to choose a contract that works for you.

What if something goes wrong?

Source Medical is always here for you. Things can happen when you travel, whether you experience travel delays from weather or you miss your flight on the way to a contract, we will help you find a solution.

Can I travel with friends or family?

Absolutely! Many nurses travel with friends, significant others, spouses, and/or children, while others travel with other traveling healthcare professionals.
